When do Alaska fish counts start in 2027?

ADF&G’s first counts usually post in mid-May. Over the last 10 seasons the earliest count on this page, Anchor River king, usually started about May 15; the Kenai River king early run about May 18; and the Kenai River sockeye count on Jul 1. Each run’s usual start, peak week and halfway day are in the run-timing chart above.

What was the biggest Alaska salmon run in 2026?

Of the runs on this page, Kenai River sockeye: 1,111,781 fish counted in 2026, against 4,286,091 in 2025 and a 10-year average of 1,986,461.

Which runs reached their ADF&G escapement goal in 2026?

By the count (fish counted passing the site, ADF&G preliminary), 8 of the 17 runs with an ADF&G goal reached its goal range: Kenai River sockeye, Kasilof River sockeye, Russian River sockeye (early run), Russian River sockeye (late run), Anchor River king, Fish Creek sockeye, Copper River sockeye and Saltery Creek sockeye. When is the peak of the Kenai River sockeye run?

Over the last 10 seasons, the week of Jul 23 to Jul 29 carried the most Kenai River sockeye on average (23% of the run). The count usually passes the halfway mark between Jul 23 and Aug 3, and half the run passes between about Jul 21 and Aug 5.

Why do the Kenai River king and Russian River sockeye counts have two runs?

Each is two runs that ADF&G manages separately, with its own escapement goal: an early run and a late run. ADF&G’s Kenai River king count switches from the early run to the late run on Jul 1 (goals: early run OEG 3,900–6,600, late run OEG 15,000–30,000), and the Russian River sockeye count on Jul 15 (early run BEG 22,000–42,000, late run SEG 44,000–85,000). This page shows each count in one view, with the two runs shaded and labelled and each run’s total compared with its own goal.

Where do these numbers come from, and how often are they updated?

Every count is the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s (ADF&G) preliminary daily number from its sonar and weir counting sites, which ADF&G can revise. Alaska FishTopia is independent and not part of ADF&G. In season (May 15 to Sep 30), the numbers are updated daily, throughout the day, as ADF&G posts them. Off season the numbers don’t change; each run’s own page links to the ADF&G source.

How Alaska fish counts work

A fish count is the number of fish of one species that pass a counting site on their way upstream, counted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) with sonar or at a weir. Each day’s count is added to a season total, which ADF&G compares with the run’s escapement goal: the number of fish it aims to have reach the spawning grounds. The counts on this site are ADF&G’s preliminary numbers, which ADF&G can revise.

The Alaska FishTopia app follows more than 100 combinations of rivers and species. On this site, every run above has its own page, and the three busiest rivers have a page that puts their runs side by side.

How this page works out its numbers

  • Counts and totals: ADF&G’s preliminary daily counts. A day with a count above zero is a counted day; the season total adds them up, the same way as every count page and the public data file.
  • Two-run counts: Kenai River king (early run to Jun 30, late run from Jul 1) and Russian River sockeye (early run to Jul 14, late run from Jul 15) are totalled, averaged and compared with a goal run by run, using ADF&G’s boundary dates.
  • Averages: the mean of the last 10 seasons with counts before this one (fewer where the count is newer). In season the comparison runs to the same date. A season ADF&G counted only in part, for example in high water, lowers the average; the year-by-year charts show every season.
  • Run timing: from the same 10 seasons: the median first and last counted day, the median days the running total passed a quarter, half and three quarters of the season, and the 7 days with the largest average share of the run.
  • Fishing open or closed: not shown yet. Emergency-order status from verified ADF&G notices is planned for the 2027 season; until then, check ADF&G’s emergency orders before you go.
